So I’ve been like totally MIA from the tumblr world for a while, truth be told I’ve felt kinda MIA from just about everything lately, not that I expect any of you even noticed ;).

There’s one line in this song that is just amazing:

There’s a calm before the storm and the Western front is quiet,
I’ve got Rembrandt as my right hand and Solo as my pilot
.

See? Awesome.

“Midnight Swim”

THE SUN
WILL SET TONIGHT
THE SUN
WILL SET

It’s a midnight swim
Where it is late and the air is all clear
And I remember that evening, you on the floor

I was attached to the ceiling
Look behind the glass in your mouth
These words I am due for

The sun will set tonight under the lonely dreamers
LONELY DREAMERS
Only to rise again, so we can start it over
WE’LL START IT AGAIN

And you were right
When you whispered in my ear, and it all became so clear
It’s gonna be alright, everything will be alright

Even if, even if the city ignites
Look behind the glass in your mouth
These words I am due for

The sun will set tonight under the lonely dreamers
LONELY DREAMERS
Only to rise again so we can start it over
WE’LL START IT AGAIN

Now to
Get back to the room where there’s windows
As large as the city below
Now to
Get back to the room where there’s windows

As large as the city below

Bring me down to the safe
Unlock the pain
Until then

The sun will set tonight under the lonely dreamers
LONELY DREAMERS
Only to rise again so we can start it over
(We’ll start it again) so we can start it over
(We’ll start it again) so we can start it over
WE’LL START IT AGAIN!

The sun will set tonight

Now it’s nothing new for a band to have different versions of the same song, acoustic, remixes, even slightly changed lyrics… but I see the concept that the band 36 Crazyfists did as a little different and pretty interesting.  What they gave us are two different songs with the same lyrics.  “Midnight Swim” has the typical energy and metal style for this band, while “The City Ignites” is not merely an acoustic version of the song, but a completely different take.  Rather than simply changing the feel, what we end up with are two different musical interpretations of the same lyrical theme, which I just think is pretty cool.

“The City Ignites”

It’s a midnight swim
Where it is late and the air is all clear
And I remember that evening, you on the floor
I was attached to the ceiling
Look behind the glass in your mouth
These words I am due for

The sun will set tonight under the lonely dreamers
Only to rise again, so we can start it over
We’ll start it again

And you were right
When you whispered in my ear, and it all became so clear
It’s gonna be alright, everything will be alright
Even if, even if the city ignites
Look behind the glass in your mouth
These words I am due for

The sun will set tonight under the lonly dreamers
Only to rise again, so we can start it over
We’ll start it again

Now to
Get back to
The room where there’s windows
As large as the city

The sun will set tonight under the lonely dreamers
Only to rise again, so we can start it over
We’ll start it again

THEM CROOKED VULTURES in Boston?

Interesting… Very interesting…

It goes on and on and on… it’s HEAVEN & HELL!
And it certainly was.  Last night’s show in Boston was, in a word, fucking epic.  I’ll do my best to sum it up, but I doubt my words can truly do justice to the amazement that was this performance.
The Venue: The Bank of America Pavilion in South Boston (Seaport Area, Silver Line for you locals) is basically a big circus tent on the water, with a stage.  But on this night it was the location of some great rock and classic metal.  The view was certainly not bad, sound was plenty loud enough, and the cool breeze off the ocean was a very nice added bonus!
Opening Up: Coheed & Cambria did the honors, and I must say were much better than I expected.  Great energy coupled with a fantastic cover of Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper” definitely got this crowd on it’s feet and pumped and ready.  Interestingly as well, they ended their set playing “Welcome Home” (the one song of theirs I’ve actually heard before, and really like) followed by a 15 minute jam session, which sounded really good without getting too repetitive or boring.  Certainly a job well done by these boys!
Let the show begin:  Easing in with the instrumenal “E5150”, the metal gods then burst onto the scene into “The Mob Rules”, not wasting any time getting into such a high energy rocking song.  The rest of the night was a mix, sometimes fast, sometimes slow, all of it amazing.  Much of their music has such a dark, almost sensual groove to it, I know, sounds like a weird thing to say, but it’s there (if you ignore the lyrics and focus just on the music).  Anyway, what the gang delivered was a night full of music old and new, with songs off their latest album fitting in perfectly with the classics.  And the stage show, demon gargoyles with glowing eyes, weird trippy videos, lights and lasers, it was as much a visual show as audio.  I always loved Bill Ward, and his early Sabbath stuff was definitely very influential on my own drumming style, but I have to say, Vinny Appice is an amazing drummer, and perfect for this group.  And his kit, wow!  He was not only surrounded by drums in a circle, but above him forming a kind of drum dome which made me think just one thing, WANT.  Butler and Iommi work together in perfect unison, showcasing both of their just incredible talents.  And at 67 (according to wikipedia, so you know it’s true), Ronnie Dio can still belt it out better than the rest, and was god-like in the way he engaged the audience and brought every song to life.
So, short version, if you ever have a chance to see these guys, DO IT.  Trust me, this is one not to miss.

A dedication…

If I may be allowed to get briefly just a little personal, and yet remain overly vague (s’how I roll), I just heard this song again for the first time in probably years and it instantly reminded me of, well 2 people.  One of them I call my brother (cousin, technically), a firefighter and one of the nicest and most selfless people I’ve ever known.  The other I’m sure would adamantly deny being called “heroic” in any sense, but is such to me on a much more personal level.  Sometimes people come along in your life when you most need them, even if you’re not fully aware of that need until you realize just how much they have helped you.  This song reminds me of how grateful I am to know such people.

Thanks
For everything you are
For everything you were…

As long as I’m around
I will be your thread
